What Should a New Zealand Invoice Include?

New Zealand GST-registered businesses now work with taxable supply information rather than a mandatory single-document “tax invoice” system. The information that needs to be provided or retained depends on the value and type of the supply. For many taxable supplies, relevant information can include the seller's name or trading name, GST number, invoice date, description of the goods or services and the amount paid or payable. Additional buyer information and GST calculations may be required depending on the transaction.

Create GST Invoices for New Zealand

GST is an important part of invoicing for many New Zealand businesses. If you're GST registered and make taxable supplies, you need to provide and keep the appropriate taxable supply information. Inland Revenue states that the required information depends on the value and type of supply. For example, GST-related information can include the GST-exclusive amount, GST amount and GST-inclusive amount, or the GST-inclusive amount together with an appropriate statement that GST is included. Invoice Serve gives you a convenient way to organize your invoice details and include applicable GST information before sending your invoice to a customer.

Tax Invoice vs Taxable Supply Information in New Zealand

New Zealand changed its GST invoicing rules on 1 April 2023. The previous requirement to use a single document called a "tax invoice" was replaced by a broader requirement to provide and keep taxable supply information. This means that businesses can use different records together to support their GST returns. The information doesn't necessarily have to appear in one physical document.

Traditional approach Current NZ approach
Tax invoice Taxable supply information
Single invoice document Information can be contained in multiple records
Older GST terminology Current GST terminology
Tax invoice wording commonly used Tax Invoice” can still be used
